the best creams: the scoop on BB and CC creams

  • the-best-creams

What exactly is the difference between BB and CC creams? What do they even stand for? Think of these alphabet-themed creams as makeup with skincare benefits. We break it down for you and give our top recommendations.

A BB cream, which stands for “Beauty Balm” cream, is generally a tinted moisturizer with added skincare benefits, such as an SPF, antioxidants as well as more active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid to moisturize and peptides for anti-aging properties. BB creams work well if you want to even out your skin tone but don’t like the feeling of wearing foundation.

  • the-best-creams-christian-dior

Glow recommends: Christian Dior Diorskin Nude BB Créme

Why we love it: This BB cream is extremely lightweight, and blends into the skin flawlessly, leaving a natural, glowing sheen to the skin. It also comes with an SPF 10, which makes it perfect for daytime when you want to even out your skin without wearing a lot of makeup. If you’re spending a full day out in the sun, then be sure to layer with a higher SPF level sunscreen.

  • the-best-creams-marcelle

    Glow recommends: Marcelle BB Cream
    (Available at Shoppers Drug Mart)

Why we love it: Perfect for sensitive skin types, this hypoallergenic BB cream also contains aloe and chamomile to soothe and brighten skin. The creamy formula also dries to a soft matte finish, so it’s perfect for normal to combination skin types. The coverage buildable, so if you need a bit more coverage, just dab a bit more product on any areas that need a bit more TLC.

  • the-best-creams-stila

Glow recommends: Stila Stay All Day 10 in One HD Beauty Balm With Broad Spectrum SPF 30

Why we love it: This one-shade-fits-all beauty balm has a light coverage that adds luminosity to the skin. Great for mature skin types, it contains anti-aging peptides and bamboo and pea extracts to visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Its oil-free and paraben-free formula makes it suitable for all skin types as well.

A CC cream, which stands for “Colour Correcting” or “Colour Control” cream, is a product that generally offers slightly more coverage than a BB cream, and targets more specific areas such as dark spots and sallow undertones with its light-reflecting particles. Think of a CC cream as the next generation BB cream— it offers more coverage but still maintains a light and airy texture.

Glow recommends: Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream SPF

Why we love it: This CC cream works wonders on dull, dreary skin to perk it up and make your skin dewy and glowing. The product applies smoothly and sets to a natural yet brightening finish. Hydrating but never greasy, this product is an amazing long-lasting product to wear all day during the summer with its SPF of 30!

  • the-best-creams-smashbox

Glow recommends: Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Dark Spot Correcting (available at Shoppers Drug Mart)

Why we love it: This product specifically targets dark spots, helps fade imperfections and even prevents future discolorations. Its creamy formula makes it ideal for drier skin types, and with active ingredients such as antioxidants and peptides, this CC cream also nourishes skin and prevents signs of aging. It comes in a wide variety of shades, meaning you’ll find one that matches your skin tone seamlessly.
