“Discipline” is what Alt says she has in common with the important loves of her life, all of whom have been athletes. For
14 years she was married to Ron Greschner, a former NHL player who was a defenceman with the New York Rangers when the couple wed in 1983. She was madly in love with Ayrton Senna, a Brazilian Formula One champion who died in a crash in 1994. And for the past 13 years she has been with Alexei Yashin, another hockey player, who was with the Ottawa Senators when she met him and who now suits up for a team back in his native Russia. She describes Yashin as “gorgeous,” “utterly fascinating” and “the most masculine man I know”—even though, as she points out, “He picks my clothes, designed my office and loves show tunes.” And she loves watching him on the ice. “He’s just so graceful.”
But she’s also familiar with the less charming aspects of the sport. She recalls witnessing Greschner in a fight that went so long that the combatants stopped to catch their breath and then continued. “They came and got me. They said, ‘You have to take him to the hospital.’ Can you imagine? I’m in four-inch heels at a hockey game, snow and ice outside, and I’m carrying a six-foot-four, 250-pound ice hockey player, who’s woozy…. Hockey is a tough game, and they expected their guys just to suck it up.”
Alt has also been riled by the expectations she’s encountered in her own professional life. One of the first of a new breed of model for whom posing was not a sideline but a full-time job, she can remember one issue of a magazine in which she was on both the front and back covers, and in five ads inside. At that point, she was told that she was risking overexposure, that she needed to take time off. She recalls her response: “What do I do [with] time off? Tell me. You took me out of college. You worked me seven days a week, three jobs a day. I have no life and now you’re telling me to take time off—and do what?”
And now, the idea of time off seems even funnier to her. “Can you imagine anyone today being overexposed? Seriously.”
